Hi! Welcome to Non-Gamer Gamer Girl Reviews, where I, a non-gamer gamer girl, post reviews of games I play. You might find yourself asking, why? Why would I read game reviews from a self-proclaimed “non-gamer”? A valid question, my friend, but the answer is very simple. I don’t approach games the way a gamer would. I approach them like a person who has read a lot of books, watched a lot of movies, played some D&D, and teaches high school English. I approach games like someone who cares about vibes and story, and doesn’t really know anything about gaming. I approach games in a way that I think a lot of people would like to approach games, but sometimes all the jargon and the more toxic corners of the gaming community make it all just feel so inaccessible. And I wanted to create a space that focuses on the aspects of games with which we non-gamers (and some very excellent gamers) are more concerned.
I am not an expert, and that is important to note from the start. In my first dungeon in Final Fantasy XIV, my partner advised me to just focus on healing “the tank,” and when I asked, “who is the tank,” my poor partner’s brain entirely broke. I am NOT a gamer. I’m just a person who decided to start playing games and writing about it. I won’t be able to provide insights about the more technical aspects of video games. I won’t get references to traditional gaming things. I have to look down at my controller to remember which button is X and which one is A. I mix up the bumpers and the triggers. I don’t understand why sometimes the start button is called that. I very consistently accidentally click in my thumbstick. I cannot make my characters walk in straight lines. But, I do know about story, and about writing, and about music and character and art, and what I can tell you is whether I had fun, why I think that is, and encourage you to explore the gaming world too. There’s so much cool content, and the fact that you have the engage with it via controller or mouse and keyboard should not prevent anyone who wants to from jumping in feet first.
